Sad Times

I got word today that a friend's Chocolate Lab, Ellie, passed away after an unexpected illness. When Ellie and Pappy got together, they were like ball-obsessed, pizzle-chewing bookends-- if you could find bookends that didn't look remotely similar. And this sad news comes just after hearing that our oldest dog park pal, Jojo, has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

We bring dogs into our families knowing that we're likely to see them race through their too-short lives, but still we're never quite prepared for the reality. Hold your dogs tight tonight. I know I will.

Thanks Nat for the kind words. It is a very sad day. Maybe I can teach the Maggot to fetch a ball?

But think of the joy and love they pack into their years.

I lost my 11 year old boxer to lymphoma in 2003; he was an awesome boy. We went through 6 mos of chemo (all for me; it didn't help him much). His son went to an intestinal cancer in 2005 at the age of 8. My heart breaks every time I think of them. My prayers go out....

A little piece of our hearts go with them when they leave us. Remember the good times and the smiles they brought, and that seems to help.

Sorry to hear your sad news. We never get long enough with our dogs. But I agree with William Tell that remembering the joy they bring really helps. J1 (& Jackson) x
