Growing Your Dog Blog

I came across this blog article concerning how to best promote your niche blog. It really struck me how this maps to my blog and dog blogs in general. It may elicit some "that's obvious" or "I'm already doing that" moments, but the article does an astute job of summarizing the sociology of blogging and a strategy for success. They come at it from the angle of popularizing a blog to make money, but I think it is equally relevant if you aren't profit driven.

A big point they make is the importance of continually participating in your niche community, and keeping up with your peers' blogs. I definitely see big changes on my site's activity based on whether I am "putting myself out there" with other blogs, but that's tough for me to sustain. Being a hermit, it's hard for me not to veer off into my own little world.

We will come visit your blog even if you don't have time to visit us. Mom has over 300 entries on her Bloglines account to read. That is the ONLY bad thing about going to the country. Everybody blogs over the weekend and we come back to literally hundreds of entries to read.

Dachsies,
It's folks like you that keep the ball rolling. Thanks for checking in.

Yeah, and it somehow takes some of the fun out of it. Makes it less of a personal effort and more like "work." Good thing Gussie is laid back and not very competitive. Otherwise, someone else would have to adopt him and blog.

Mom loves your blog because she find it's quite humorous. I think Pappy is just a cool looking dog.

Mom started the blog because she was having a hard time finding info about personal accounts of dogs with bone cancer. We have met some lovely people through it and hope to continue meeting people.

Yeas Pappy, you are on our bloglines so we always check out your new posts. We just enjoy reading other people's blogs regardless of whether they visit us or not.

Gus, Finnegan, Oscar,
I appreciate your world views. We have pleasant community, and sometimes it gets less pleasant when it gets too big.

Hey Pappy, thanks for the information. By the way, we love your blogs. We just wish our mom wasn't so THRIFTY so we could visit more sites more often. (She still has old-fashioned dial up for $2.95/month and we get restless waiting for the pages to load!!) Mom says she will be viewing your latest video at work tomorrow before the bosses come in!

Stella & Annie,
Dial up? How fantastically stone age. In truth, I'm an IT guy, and we were on dial-up until about a year ago-- around the same time I started bloggin'.
